The Mivos/Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize was established in 2011 to support the work of emerging and mid-career composers and to encourage continued interest in new compositions for string quartet. The winning composer, selected from over one hundred applicants, receives a cash prize and a performance of their work in New York City by the Mivos Quartet.

The Mivos/Kanter Prize is made possible through the generous contributions of Carl Kanter.

​Mivos Quartet is pleased to announce the seventh annual Mivos/Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize. The competition is designed to promote works of talented emerging composers currently residing in the United States. Its winner will receive a $300 cash prize, a $100 travel stipend (if applicable), and a New York performance of the submitted piece during Mivos Quartet’s 2017-18 season. The Mivos/Kanter Prize is made possible through the generous support of Carl Kanter.

 

Eligibility: Eligible composers are those currently residing in the United States who are in the early to middle stages of developing an international career and for whom this prize would represent a significant career opportunity.



Application Fee: $10. Payment will be accepted online via Paypal or credit/debit card by clicking ​​the button.

How to apply: ​Applications will only be accepted via email to​ mivoskanterprize@gmail.com​.

Composers must include the following materials as email attachments:

  • Cover letter (PDF or MS Word format) that includes applicant's name, address, phone number, and email, plus the title, duration, and year of the composition entered.

  • Artistic resumé or CV

  • Full score (PDF format only, do not include parts): composer's name should not be on the score, as scores will be reviewed anonymously.

It is strongly encouraged that composers also include these additional materials in their application:

  • Audio recording of the piece (MP3 preferable, though MIDI rendering is acceptable)

  • Program notes

Compositions must be scored for two violins, viola, and cello, and may include electronics, amplification, and/or multimedia. Works may not exceed 30 minutes in length.

Submissions must be time-stamped by June 15, 2017, 11:59pm EST.

​

The competition will consist of two rounds. Applicants will receive an email confirming receipt of application fee and materials. A maximum of ten finalists will be notified via email by August 15, 2017. Finalists will be required to submit hard copies of their scores and parts via postal mail by September 7, 2017. The winner will be announced on September 30, 2017.
